As the sun was setting on a balmy summer night, Erik and Myriah's wedding reception was in full swing. Located at the charming Kuitpo Hall, guests were served a generous spread of grazing tables, paella, and boutique bevvies from a cute converted caravan.
Erik and Myriah were fairly relaxed about the song selection and musical direction for the remainder of their reception. They'd compiled a Spotify playlist with some of their favourite party tunes as a guide, and highlighted a few 'must play' songs. They had a mix of modern favourites, plus some classics from the 70s and 80s, across a wide range of genres. It's always handy for us to have an insight into couples' musical tastes, which we can then use as a guide to imagine how and where the night's musical journey may go. We're always happy to meet clients prior to their event, or call or chat over email, to make sure our musical selections are on point for what you're after.
Wedding Dance
"One Crowded Hour" by Augie March
Our advice for choosing a first dance song for your wedding, is to select something that's meaningful for you both, reflects your personality as a couple, and of course, something that you feel comfortable to dance to - however that may look! Erik and Myriah's love for one another was evident as they swayed gently around the dancefloor to this heartfelt tune from one of Australia's most poignant lyric writers.
For the remainder of their Reception, Erik and Myriah trusted us to curate a playlist based on the Funk Bros DJ sound. Because guests were still dining and the night was young, we started off with some background beats - music that would float over the guests and provide some mood, but not be too intrusive to conversation. From there, we gradually introduced stronger beats to start the guests' heads' nodding and toes tapping. After a couple of hours, the mood was ripe for dancing and the guests had a great time expressing themselves across the makeshift dance floor set up on the lawn. The following tracks offer a snapshot of how we built the mood from eats and drinks towards a dancing celebration.
"Where is the love" by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway
"Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" by De La Soul
"Lost" by Frank Ocean
"Since I Left You" by The Avalanches
"What's the use?" by Mac Miller
Dance-floor Highlights
Guests who were young, old, and in between, got their dance on. Some of the more enthusiastic responses were to these tracks:
"Twist & Shout" by The Beatles
"Can't Get Enough of Your Love" by Barry White
"September" by Earth, Wind and Fire
"Call Me Al" by Paul Simon
"Music Sounds Better With You" by Stardust
There was high demand for Darude's "Sandstorm", so we chucked it on at the end for a bit of a giggle:
Erik & Myriah say "Funk Bros DJs were absolutely brilliant at keeping our guests entertained and supplied great music. They got to the venue early to set up, and communicated with us throughout our planning process. They played songs that made everyone dance. They responded to the crowd - when more people were dancing they’d put more dance songs on. Really professional at their job and they loved what they were doing, always had a smile on their face! Highly recommend using Funk Bros DJs for your next function! Thanks Nick and Ben!"
Thanks Erik and Myriah for trusting us with the music for your wedding reception!
